Can a young person get into farming today?
I wrote a feature following the journey of several 20-somethings in Ontario who have chosen farming as a career. One is a city kid who faces barriers breaking into the industry and the rest are young people who come from farming backgrounds. I explore the barriers to farming (initial investment, learning curve) with stories from my “city” and “farm” sources. I also uncover their personal motivations and attraction to farming as a career. Within the article, I interview Professor Alfons Weersink, who teaches agriculture at the University of Guelph, for formal insight into the agriculture industry.
